The Centre undertakes theoretical and empirical analysis in the fields of national and world economics, investigates regional processes and other interdisciplinary areas of Social Sciences. The centre publishes and promotes new research results, improves scientific tools and methods, builds and maintains databases essential for quantitative research. It develops ideas and recommendations in key policy matters, participates in upholding the quality of Master and PhD university programmes by developing the curricula on the scientific areas of its operation.

By unifying excellence in research, authenticity in science, and a commitment to society, the centre's network is set to produce values for both national and international success for Hungarian and universal scientific advancement. Building on our national research traditions, being part of the only full-time public research network in Hungary, our primary aim is to play a fundamental role in promoting the common wealth and in building the foundation of our future through valuable scientific achievements based on highly promising discovery research.

The centre was established on January 1st 2012 with the merger of three academic institutes. The Institute of Economics, the Institute of World Economics and the Institute for Regional Studies remain independent in their scientific activities. They continue to fulfil their public tasks at the highest scientific level as defined in the Deed of Foundation.
